Sailor, Sailor Moon! by enigmawing Sailor, Sailor Moon! by enigmawing
Ah, the infamous "Saban Moon," crushing the hopes and dreams of fans everywhere.

For those that don't know, Toon Makers produced a Sailor Moon pilot for an American audience back in 1994. It was a live-action/CG/hand-drawn animation hybrid that does little to resemble the original anime that was eventually dubbed into English by DiC. It sort of feels like a cross between Power Rangers, She-ra, and . . . Princess Gwenevere, maybe? The actual pilot never aired of course, but a presentation reel has long been available via youtube. [link]

The reason this pops into my head now is because a lot of production cels have recently turned up on eBay. I'm ashamed to admit that I sort of want one. ;p

***Drawn, colored, and crappily animated in CS5. ***

I honestly would have been interested to see how they pulled it off once I noticed through my horror that one of them was in a wheel-chair. They beat Extreme Ghostbusters to the punch with a handi-capable hero........and now my brain has shipped them. Internet make that a thing!

I actually like this style, but the show probably would've been worse than the DiC dub

Thank god it never aired. It wouldn't be popular. But this is a good picture.

I actually kinda like the design. I love Sailor Moon, and I actually wouldn't really mind if DIC made their own adaptation of it, just as long as it's close to the original.

I doubt they would have. If anything I wish someone would redub the original uncut episodes.

I will always have a fond spot in my heart for Sailor Barbie. :D As well as gratitude that it wasn't chosen over dubbing the original.

Random Guy after watching:"Thank you... thank you for *not* doing that." <--- Agreed! :giggle:

Though I am curious... if they are selling the cells from that, if someone out there still has the actual footage shot for the pilot etc. XD

Yeah, I first saw this crazy clip years ago when I was still doing VHS fansub trades, probably in 1997. I remember my jaw dropped! It's sort of mind-boggling that TV producers were so scared of alienating audiences with anime that they felt the need to completely redo it American-style before attempting to sell the concept. :o

Glad that's not really the case anymore.

Power Rangers and She-ra? Honestly I don't know what to say. I am not a fan of PR so it wouldn't be as appealing to me as the anime. Then again, anime is more appealing to me than any tokusatsu shows so I won't be interested.

As for your rendition, it is extremely well done and certainly captures that She-Ra/Sailor Moon hybrid you talked about. In addition, the "crappy" animation looks nice and gives it a nice pseudo-3D/holographic effect, at least to my defective optic receptors.

I wonder if I'd have been a PR fan if it came out when I was much younger (I recall the initial craze over the toys was when I started working my first retail job).

And thanks. :) I was pretty much going for the sparkly henshin background the transformation scenes are known for, and rotated it for each frame to get teh effect. Drawing her in this style was sort of a guilty pleasure, lol.

I also wonder if PR would be more appealing to me if I'd watch them when I was younger. Probably not. I remember my brother was a fan of Ultraman and I was not too thrilled about it back then.

And You are very welcomed! Your work is always nice and pretty well done. The effect turned out really good as I'd mentioned and I know what you're talking about regarding transformations scenes. I used to watch Sailor Moon when it aired in CN and I saw plenty of that.

PS: Do NOT ever feel shame of succumbing to your guilty pleasures! :P

A Sailor Moon series in that art style would've been fine, but making it a live-action hybrid would've been completely unnecessary. Great work!

I would have totally bought the live-action characters becoming animated ones when I was a kid,but as an adult I'm sure the live-actions segments would have been incredibly cheesy. :DX: I'm actually glad this wasn't made but still have a strange curiosity for what might have been.

And thanks! :)

Definitely, although I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high. I'm really curious about how the character designs will look and how the storyline is supposed to be more mature.

I'm probably just as excited about the prospect of new merchandise; most of my old goodies had to be left behind or given away when I moved.

Sailor Moon is what really got me into anime. I too am trying not to get my hopes too high since I have seen how easily they can screw up re-imaginings of classic series.

The great thing is that since anime is more mainstream now then it was back in the 90's we will have access to an even wider variety of awesome merchandise.

I'm not as into anime as I used to be, but Sailor Moon is definitely what got me started. I still love the old-school shoujo stuff of the 90's and do check out new series every so often. :)

Yeah, I bet we'll get to see all sorts of cool stuff. Interesting that new merchandise is already available! I really, really want to get this: [link] :D

A Sailor Moon uber-geek like me and I never heard this? Wow.

But that design just screams late 80s/early 90s US animation. And while people have screamed about the dub of Sailor Moon, and rightly so, seeing a Sailor Moon that resembled the excruciating presentation that was She-Ra, maybe we were better off.

Gotten any complaints of that background inducing epileptic seizures? :)

Wow, so you never heard of this one? A friend sent me the presentation on a VHS back around 1997 or so, way back when everyone was still trading fansubs. :) Nothing too exciting though, it's the same camcorder-sourced music video that's all over youtube.

I loved She-Ra as a kid, so I'm left wondering if little girls would have enjoyed a show like this and later looked into the original source, or if it would simply be dismissed as crap once they'd outgrown it. I still kinda dig She-Ra specifically for the nostalgia factor and overall designs; there weren't enough girl-empowerment shows when I was growing up after all.

Anyway, this makes the DiC version look like Shakespeare, lol. If you dig around online someone has posted the script of the pilot (too bad the actual pilot has never surfaced), and all of the characters are significantly changed in appearance. If I remember right, Venus is a brunette, Jupiter is black, and Mercury is a redhead in a wheelchair (they were smack-dab in the middle of a very politically-correct era of children's entertainment, after all). Oh, and Queen Beryl has blue skin. :p

No complaints as of yet . . . you've just gotta love the seizure-enducing henshin backgrounds! :XD:

The first thing I thought when I saw the thumbnail was that it had a definite She-ra vibe to it. I saw some clips from the pilot years ago, and remember it being terrible...

:iconenigmawing:

Interestingly enough, one of the producers of the pilot said there was no intention to resemble She-ra, all they were trying to do was American the characters and animation. Then again he also said they were going for the whole Filmation vibe given their strict budget. ;p

Yeah, it's terrible, but that's part of the fun here, lol.
